Farm Trip

We took our first trip of the year today and I must say, it went very well.  We are fortunate to have an accessible farm about half an hour away from the school.  I loved this bear in a wheelchair carving that they had inside the main entrance.

The children were able to see, feed and touch the animals.  At most farms we can't get close enough.  We also went on a wagon ride, complete with tie downs for the wheelchairs.
The kittens were brought right up the children to touch.
The farm also has an accessible stable and runs a wonderful riding program.  Here, the horse stands between the stairs and the person in a wheelchair can pull right up and get on the horse.  The owner of the farm has been in the para-Olympics for horse riding.  Many local para-Olympians train here.
All the stables are accessible and someone in a wheelchair is able to take care of their own horse.
 The feeding buckets swing out.
 The floor is level.
The outdoor rink is also accessible.  It had rained over night but stayed dry while we were there.

We went in the corn maze.  A first for many of our students.
 We saw a turkey.
And even eggs in the bushes.

First day of fall

We celebrated the first day of fall on Friday by making fall trees.  We used brown paint to paint our arms and hands.  We then pressed our arm onto paper to make the trunk and branches of the tree.  When it was dry we glued leaves on it.

 Beautiful fall trees.

What is a good pet?

We have been working on pets and yesterday we read "What Pet to Get" by Emma Dodd.  We then decided what animals made good pets. I think they did a pretty good job.  I don't know many people with a star fish though.

Calendar time

I can't believe how long it's taking me to get organized this year.  I don't know where the time is going.  There never seems to be enough time in the day to do everything.  I have finally got some of my calendar organized.  I got the idea for most of my calendar at Mama Jenn's website.  I thought the rings would work better this year.  I wouldn't be searching for numbers and words.

I still need to add the weather and our question of the day.

On the road to a great year

I can't believe how busy the first two weeks of school have been.  Tomorrow is a PD day so hopefully we will be able to regroup and get organized.  I thought I would share our back to school bulletin board.  The children's names are on the cars.

We were "mint" to work together.

I wanted to start the year off right with my educational assistants.  My two EA's are my right and left hand.  I don't know how I could do what I do without them.  I found this idea on Pinterest and adapted it for them.  One jar is filled with regular mints and the other with LifeSaver mints.  Sorry the pictures aren't the greatest.

Missing in Action

I'm so sorry that I had been missing in action lately.  This first week of school has been crazy busy.  It's amazing how much progress we make by June.  I forgot how rough the first week can be.  I feel so unorganized and we have spent the week trying to figure out lunches and medication and little people falling asleep.  I have such a wide range of abilities this year (both academically and physically) that it is going to take some serious scheduling to make everything work.

I want to thank Class Full of Special Kinders,  Rowdy in First Grade and Ms Rachels Room for nominating me for awards.  It means so much to me that you enjoy what I write.  If you haven't checked out their blogs yet, please do.  They are wonderful as well.

I have some pictures that I took this week.  I'm hoping that I will have time over the weekend to post them.

Fab Finds

I can't believe that today was my first official day back in class.  No students today though.  Just trying to get the classroom organized enough for next week.  I did a little shopping last week and here are a few of my great finds.

A value pack of pens and markers.   On sale at Costco, they were a steal.

I love this book.  It is so cute.  About a fairy was gets a magic wand to put icing on cupcakes but she can't get it to work right.
This is like a white board but the "markers" are filled with water.  Write on the board and it dries clear.  Just refill with water.
I thought this pirate ship would be great when we do our pirate unit.
