Tracing Alphabet Book

Even though summer holidays have just started here, I am always in teacher mode.  Every year I tell myself that "this year" I'm going to be more organized so that the fall is less stressful.

With that in mind I am beginning to prep some of my alphabet resources.  My alphabet tracing book is the perfect way to start the year.

Alphabet tracing book

All of my students will be new to me, so I have no idea where they are with their alphabet knowledge.  This is fun and quick book to see how many letters and sounds they know and to see where their fine motor skills are at.

I plan on making the colored posters into a tracing center by putting them in erasable sleeves.  This will save me so much laminating.

I also plan to putting up a color wall chart and printing small black and white charts for each of the children to color in themselves.  This will be perfect for when we start writing!

Last but not least, I'm going to put up the alphabet in large format on the wall.  I haven't decided yet if I'm going to put up the color version or let each of the children color one letter each and put up that version.

Spring Alphabet Freebie

I can't believe that spring break will be over tomorrow.
It hasn't felt much like spring here yet.
It's been too cold.

I thought I would brighten up the day with a little freebie for back to school.

I still have some students that don't know all their letters yet, and those that do, still need to practice matching upper and lower letters.

Here are some pictures of it in action.

Free Kindergarten Halloween Alphabet Match

Halloween is just around the corner and we are working on the alphabet.

We have been putting the alphabet in order.

Uppercase

And lowercase

We have been matching the uppercase to the lowercase.

We have also been playing a matching game.  Depending on the level the children are working at, we have done this with matching lowercase to lowercase, uppercase to uppercase and uppercase to lowercase.

You can pick this up for free by clicking on the picture below.

Alphabet Freebie

Does it feel like spring yet where you are?  Although it doesn't feel very springy here, I thought a summer freebie would get us feeling in the warmer weather mood.

So here is a little freebie for you.

Enjoy.

Polar Express alphabet

We are getting close.  Only one week left before the holiday starts.  Are you in survival mode?  We have so many special events happening right now that I'm not sure how we are getting anything done.

We are managing to get in a few academic activities in-between the plays, singing and craft activities.

I still have a few students that are missing a few letters of the alphabet.  We keep practicing every day.

Putting letters in order is a little tougher.

We are also working on beginning sounds.  Practice, practice, practice.

Work Station Wednesday - Marshmallows

This week's work stations are about marshmallows.
Marshmallows are perfect for a camping or summer theme.

We combined marshmallows with our literacy work.
I also used the snap cubes that I talked about on Monday.

Our first activity involved putting the alphabet in the correct order.
I had some skewers in the cupboard and thought they would make perfect marshmallow sticks.
I attached a letter "marshmallow" to each snap cube and had the children thread them on the sticks.
Perfect fine motor work and they were easy to pick up.

Next we did some work on "missing letters".  The children had to find the marshmallow with the correct letter and place it on the card.  For some children I had cards with Velcro.

For other children I put the "marshmallows" on snap cubes so they were easier to manipulate.

Next, we matched upper and lower case letters.

We then worked on word families.  Again I put the "marshmallows" on snap cubes and had the children put them on the sticks.

Once the children were finished, I had them read the words to me.

I put the word families on separate coloured snap cubes.  That way I could easily visually check to see if the children completed the task correctly.

The last game we played is a favorite.  Under one of the marshmallows is a picture of a piece of chocolate.  The children had to read the word first in order to look under the card.  The child who finds the chocolate is the winner.

I attached snap cubes to the corners of the cards so that the children could easily pick them up.
