Team Hoyt

The Paralympics begin on Aug 29th and I'm hoping that I'm going to be able to catch some of the events on tv.  While I was thinking about the events I was reminded about one of the most inspirational teams that I have ever heard of.  Team Hoyt.

I few years back I was at a seminar and saw a video about a young man who wanted to run in a benefit run and the father who made it happen.  Why was this an amazing thing? Read their incredible story and watch the video.  Have your tissues ready.

The Beginning of Team Hoyt

"In the spring of 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."

This realization was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races completed, including marathons, duathlons and triathlons (6 of them being Ironman competitions). Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days.

In a triathlon, Dick will pull Rick in a boat with a bungee cord attached to a vest around his waist and to the front of the boat for the swimming stage. For the biking stage, Rick will ride a special two-seater bicycle, and then Dick will push Rick in his custom made running chair (for the running stage).

Rick was once asked, if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick responded, "The thing I'd most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would push him for once."
The 2009 Boston Marathon was officially Team Hoyt's 1000th race. Rick always says if it comes down to doing one race a year he would like it to be the Boston Marathon: his favorite race. Dick Hoyt hopes that he is able to push Rick in the Boston Marathon when he is 70 years old (2011)! Neither Dick or Rick are ready to retire yet." (copied from their website Team Hoyt)

Therapeutic Thursday

Today is Therapeutic Thursday.  I found this really hard to blog about.  I mean, what DO I do to relax after teaching?  DO I relax?  Often in my spare time, I'm creating activities for my classroom and to sell on TpT.

During the school year I'm a hockey mum.  I love watching my boys play.  Here they are from last year.  Yes, they are BOTH goalies, so I can't say that it's really relaxing to watch them.  Being a goalie parent is very stressful.

So when I do relax I like grab a Diet Pepsi (or my new favourite, Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi)

and curl up with a good book.

How do you like to relax?  Head on over to Blog Hoppin' to find out how other teachers spend their down time.

You Know It's Back to School When....

Well it's that time of year again.  Back to School!  Even though I have two weeks of holiday left, I know that the beginning of school is looming close.  Jeannie of Kindergarten Lifestyle is having a linky party about how you know it's back to school time.

This is the biggest tell tale sign for me.  I start having dreams.  Usually not good ones either.  I call them my "room dreams".  They usually involve me being in my room (which is of course not my room) because it is either too big or too small (I mean, I could touch both walls with my outstretched arms).   I have too many kids (like 50) or no one shows up.  It might have no furniture or it might be packed with so much stuff that I can't even turn around.  You get the picture.

This is the other tell tale sign that summer is coming to an end.  I have to start going to bed at a half way decent hour in order to start getting up earlier.  No more sleeping in or staying up late.

I've had a really great summer and I'm sad to see it go.

TIFFANI
be sure to check out her blog for a great freebie.

I'm sharing two freebies that I use, beginning in the first couple of days of school.  The first one, I use to assess letter recognition and the second one, I use to assess sight word knowledge.  I hope that you can use them in your class.  Both packs come with instructions on how to use the sheets with all your students, even if they can't talk.

I would love a comment if you downloaded the packages and found them helpful.

Follow along each day of the blog hunt for more back to school ideas.

Product Correction

A kind follower let me know that there was a mistake in one of my products.  There was a letter missing in my "The Coop ABC order" activity.  I have fixed the product and added the upper case letters as well.

If you have already bought the product, please go to your purchase page at TpT and download the new version with the correction and the new game.  Click on the picture below to go to the product.
