Thematic Thursday - Forest Animal Books

On Thursdays, I'm going to highlight a few book that I love that go with the theme of the week.

Here are a few of my favourite forest animal books.

I love Bear and all of his books.  The pictures are beautiful and the stories simple.  They are perfect for kindergarten children.  The topics are timely and lend themselves well to various topics.

"The Mitten" is a perfect winter book that you can do so much with.  It's perfect for acting out, sequencing and crafts

"Where's my Teddy?" is a cute book that I have had in my library for years.  The illustrations a cute and the children love the story.

Work Station Wednesday - Forest Animals

It's work station Wednesday and I'm going to featuring some work station activities each week.
This week, I'm featuring forest animals.

This activity works on missing numbers.  I put Velcro on the blank spot so that the owls won't move when the children place them on the cards.  This reduces frustration when the children are working.  Children with poor fine motor control often have difficulty keeping pieces in place and can easily knock the pieces off of the cards.

Patterning is the next activity we did.  The colourful cards made it easier for children with visual difficulties to see.

Next we did a memory game.  I had the children find the number card and match it with the correct number of animals.

When working on adding, I had the children roll a dice.  I find dice easier to use than spinners.  Spinners require fine motor control that a lot of my students don't have.  Dice can be placed in little hands and all they have to do is drop it.

Having the children place the correct number of mushrooms on either side of the rabbit, helps them visualize the concept.

I do use a response sheet for children that can print.  If children can't print, I often use number stickers or stamps.

Matching ten frames are next.  Ten frames are a great way to visualize numbers to ten.

Ordering numbers is another skill that we work on a lot.  I mix them up and have the children put them in the right order.

Our last activity is measuring.  I used mushroom strips and the children had to measure the trees and find out how tall they were.

Another Remake

Since I updated my forest animal literacy activities, I figured I needed to do the math activities as well.
Here they are, new and improved.  I like these graphics so much better.

I will be putting the math and literacy package including the bundle, on sale for 1/2 price until Wednesday.

Forest Animal Remake

Can you believe this winter?  When will the snow stop?  They are forecasting more snow here for Wednesday.  At least it's suppose to warm up and be above freezing.  Here is the front of my house.  My son is standing across our street where our mailbox is. He's 13 and almost 5 feet tall.  At least our mailbox is now dug out.

All this cold weather has left me uninspired and in a bit of rut. Yesterday I was looking through my store, trying to find some inspiration.  I don't know why I thought I might find some there, but anyway,  I came across this.

Oh my.  I made this back in 2011 and wow, I feel like I've come a long way since then.  Back then, clip art was sparse and I didn't know all the things I know now.  I didn't even realize I had a typo in the title.  Notice it says "sheep".  How embarrassing.

Well I decided that this little product needed a makeover.
And here they are.

I'm so much happier with the new look.

I've also bundled them all together.

I am going to give one of the bundles away.  Leave me a comment and your email and when I get up in the morning, I'll pick a winner.
