This is last week for pets and in science we are moving on to the five senses.  I love doing the 5 senses because there are so many cool things you can do with it.

What Pet to Get? and a freebie

Yesterday I posted some questions about teaching children with little or no verbal skills how to read.  One of the questions was about comprehension.  Often, these children have not had an opportunity to respond to books that are read to them.  How do you test if a child understands the beginning, middle and end of a story when they can't verbally tell you?  For our students, is one reading of a book enough?

For my first unit of the year, I will be doing pets.  Most children have a pet at home or at least have the experience of someone they know with a pet.  I've picked three books to do a more in-depth study of.

             


The first book I've done activities for is "What Pet to Get?" by Emma Dodd.

I wanted to make my own communication boards for the activities.  At the beginning of the year most of my children don't have their own communication systems in place.  If they do, they are very basic.  When we start talking about different books, they often don't have the pictures they need to answer my questions.  These are the activities I've made for "What Pet to Get?".

Pet math station activities

My Pet Math Unit is ready.  This is first unit that I am going to do with my kids in September.  I'm still working on the literacy unit.

It includes eight activities.

A sorting activity.  Children can sort by colour and size.  Math talk cards are included.

 Adding and Subtracting story mats.   Use real manipulates or the pictures provided to act out adding and subrtacting stories.  Includes a response sheet.

Printing practice for numbers 1 to 10.

 5 and 10 frames.  Children use the 5 and 10 frames to help them count the number of fish in the tank.  They then put the right answer in the box. 

 Ordering numbers from 1 to 10

 Patterning.  Includes sample strips for children who need a model or are working on extending a pattern.  Includes math talk cards.

 Counting.  Children put the correct number of fish into the tank.

 Comparing.  Children give the second cat more, less or the same number of toys as the first cat.  Includes math talk cards.
