Work Station Wednesday - Dog's Colourful Day

It's work station Wednesday and I thought I would highlight one of my favourite books for the beginning of the year.

"Dog's Colorful Day" by Emma Dodd.

Now this dog goes about his day, getting a new spot on his body for every item he runs into.  It's perfect for working on colours and numbers.

When I do this book, I read it to the children every day and each day we work on a different skill.

I believe that it's very important to work on sentence structure with my non-verbal students as well as my verbal students.

This activity is perfect for that.  As we read each page, I have the children make the sentence "Now Dog has _____ spots.", changing the number each time.  I think it's important for the children to move the words to form the sentence, so that they realize that sentences are made up of individual words.

I love this activity.  As we read the story, I have the children put the correct coloured spot on the dog and put the number of spots in the box.

This activity also works on forming sentences.  We talk about what item is on dog.

As we move through the week, the sentences become more complex.  By now, we've read the book quite a few times and we talk about the object and the colour.

Thematic Thursday - Forest Animal Books

On Thursdays, I'm going to highlight a few book that I love that go with the theme of the week.

Here are a few of my favourite forest animal books.

I love Bear and all of his books.  The pictures are beautiful and the stories simple.  They are perfect for kindergarten children.  The topics are timely and lend themselves well to various topics.

"The Mitten" is a perfect winter book that you can do so much with.  It's perfect for acting out, sequencing and crafts

"Where's my Teddy?" is a cute book that I have had in my library for years.  The illustrations a cute and the children love the story.

Brown Bear - Day Five

Today was the last day of our Brown Bear book study. 

We made sentences again.  

This one was a little more difficult.  "The (animal) sees the (animal)".

At this point the children are really good at remembering what comes next.

Dont' forget the period at the end.

After we completed the sentences with our communication boards, we then made our own sentences.  I had pictures already made for my students who can't draw.

Brown Bear - Day Four

It's day four and the children are loving Brown Bear.

Today we worked on making sentences.  As I read each page, I had the children make the sentence "The (animal) is (colour)".

We made sure that we put the period at the end of the sentence.

Once we were finished making sentences, I had the children complete a take home book with the same sentences in it.  Today I had them trace the words and colour the pictures.

Brown Bear - Day Three

Today is day three of our brown bear week.

Today's focus  is on ordering the animals.

As I read the story I had the children find the correct animal and place it on the Velcro at the top of the communication board.

Once we had completed the story, I had the children do a copy that they could take home and retell with their families.

Brown Bear - Day Two

Today is our second day reading Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle.

Today, as we read the story I had the children use their crayons to colour in each of the animals.

I also displayed each of the animals on a large chart.   As I read about each animal I pointed to the correct one on the chart and we talked about what colour they needed to colour theirs.
